Applicants Sought for Bike Safety Committee

The deadline to apply is Jan. 27.

Applications are now being accepted for anyone interested in serving on the Citizens Bicycle Safety Committee.

The will be made up of seven community members appointed by the Mayor and ratified by the Council. Those interested in being a part of the committee should have background and experience in recreational and community bicycling. Council members Ed Selich and Leslie Daigle will review applications.

The Newport Beach City Council voted last week to extend the committee's term until Jan. 10, 2013. At this month's meeting, Mayor Nancy Gardner said the committee has plans to continue working to make roads safer for young bicyclists.

"We've been focusing a lot on the roads, biking and people that are riding a lot and I want to focus more on the schools and parents so they can feel that it will be safer for kids to ride their bikes," Gardner said.
