Appeals Court Sides With Newport's Sober Living Homes

A federal appeals court rules a Newport Beach ordinance created to eliminate sober living homes could have illegally discriminated against people.

A federal appeals court ruled a Newport Beach law created to eliminate sober living homes could have illegally discriminated against a group of people, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The U.S 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling brings lawsuits filed against the city n 2008 back to life, according to the report in the LA Times, and cleared the way forsome group home operators who los tmoney or closed their doors following the 2008 ordinance to be eligible for financial compensation from Newport Beach.

In its ruling, the three judge panel said although the Newport Beach ordinance did not specifically single out rehabilitation homes, the intent and enforcement were "discriminatory."
