15 Homes Tagged Under New Party Ordinance

More statistics about police activity during the holiday weekend should be available later today, a police spokeswoman said.

Newport Beach police used the new "" ordinance to tag some 15 houses and arrest 59 people over the holiday weekend, according to news reports.

About 425,000 came to Newport over the weekend, according to the Fire Department.

Under the unruly gathering law, any gathering of eight or more people making too much noise, creating traffic, urinating in public or otherwise behaving badly can be declared unruly by police. Partygoers, renters and property owners could then face fines ranging from $500 to $3,000. A violation notice also may be posted on the property where the offending party was held. Subsequent violations within six months could result in steeper fines.
