Woman Arrested in Newport Dies While in Custody

Charlotte Engle was being booked into the Orange County Jail when it was determined that she had high blood pressure and she was taken to a hospital.

A 54-year-old woman arrested by Newport Beach police Friday on suspicion of a "DUI-related offense" died while in custody, according to a release from the Sheriff's Department.

After arresting Charlotte Engle, a Huntington Beach resident, Newport police brought her to the Orange County Jail, the release said. While she was being booked, "it was determined Engle suffered from high blood pressure," the release said.

Engle was taken to Western Medical Center, where her condition "continued to deteriorate," the release said. She was pronounced dead on Sunday; an autopsy will be performed.

The district attorney's office will investigate the death, the release said.
