A woman and her small dog were seriously injured Tuesday night after being hit by a car in a Newport Coast crosswalk, a fire official reported.

The crash occurred about 7:30 p.m. at Newport Coast Drive and San Joaquin Hills Road. According to Newport Beach Fire Capt. Glenn White, the woman was struck by the car while walking her small dog in the crosswalk. She was "thrown in the air and across the pavement by the impact," White said in a released statement.

The woman was taken to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo with critical injuries. The dog was also injured, but its condition was not released.

The Newport Beach Police Department is investigating the crash. No other information was available.

Yes, is it very sad, the woman has head wounds but misses her dog of two years very much. so sad, I hope the woman who was texting when she was hit feels bad.

Debra, this intersection is on the most practicable route my son would use to ride his bike to Newport Coast ES. I say "most practicable" because by crossing here he would get to ride his bike a shorter distance, with less street crossings, and not have to walk his bike the last three hundred yards amidst the throng of pedestrians at the intersection of NCD and Ridge Park. He could actually use the school loop road. So, because this intersection is so ridiculously dangerous and virtually unmonitored, a kid's "commute" of 7-10 minutes by bike involving two crossings becomes a 20 minute ride/walk involving three crossings.

David, I sympathize with your son's commute along with other children who have to go through this intersection.
