The body of a young woman was found in the sand early Monday in Newport Beach, police said.
The woman, who appeared to be in her mid-20s, was found about 6 a.m. near Tower 71 in the area of Highland Street and West Oceanfront, according to Newport Beach police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.
"People walking on the beach found a female face down in the sand," Lowe told Patch.
When officers responded, they determined the woman was deceased.
Lowe said the woman was about 5-foot-2 with a thin build.
The Orange County coroner was working to determine the woman's identity and cause of death. When asked if any obvious signs of trauma were discovered, Lowe declined to comment.
