Vehicle Fire Damages Garage

Firefighters quickly extinguish the blaze. No injuries are reported.

A car caught fire in the garage at a home in Newport Beach today, but no one was injured, a fire official said.

The blaze was reported at 12:16 p.m. on Via Lido Nord on Lido Island, according to Jennifer Schulz, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department.

"First arriving units found a 1984 Mercedes 500SL in the garage with flames coming from the hood of the vehicle," Schulz said.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire and contain it to the garage. No one was injured, Schulz said.

The fire damaged the Mercedes and caused approximately $5,000 of damage to the structure.  The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the blaze appears to have started in the engine compartment of the vehicle.
