Update: Two Cyclists Hospitalized After Collision

Two riders in a pack of cyclists had to be hospitalized Saturday after they collided on Bonita Canyon Drive.

Two cyclists were injured and hospitalized over the weekend when they collided while riding along Newport Beach’s Bonita Canyon Drive, a police official reported.

The accident occured at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday when two bicyclists  were traveling in a group westbound on Bonita Canyon Road east of MacArthur Boulevard and collided, according to Kathy Lowe, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Police Department.

"Both bicyclists sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital," Lowe told Patch. "The accident is under investigation."

Gee. All of those cyclists who post those hateful responses to folks who post comments saying how dangerous it is to bicycle on busy streets and highways. What are they saying about this? What horrible motorist caused this mess? Answer: NO MOTORIST CAUSED THIS! Now, take this group of happy-go-lucky, devil-may-care cyclists and put them put them in a narrow, congested, extremely heavily traveled highway like PCH in Corona Del Mar and when some horrible accident happens, it's always the fault of someone else, never the fault of the cyclists. Yeah, right. Cyclists break every traffic law in the books, with the possible exception of SPEEDING. Then, when they fall off their tricycles, they ALWAYS blame someone in a car or truck. Hey, cyclists: time to look in the frigging MIRROR--and time to start taking responsibility for your own, extremely dangerous behavior.

I hope both cyclists recover quickly and get back on the bike! It's interesting seeing bicycle crashes reported as "news". I hope that's a reflection of increased general awareness of bicyclists on the roads in Newport Beach, and not just because of the injuries. Wow - Pickup-truck's comment is out of left field, though. A "bicycle vs bicycle" crash like this is the equivalent of the motorist's "bumper-thumper" that happens a thousand times a day between cars traveling in packs on the roads in California. (In Newport Coast alone last week, there were four (4) "car vs car" collisions within 1/4 mile of Newport Coast Elementary School, all in broad daylight, all in crosswalks, all requiring emegency services and tow-trucks. Broken glass still litters the intersections...)
