Tip-A-Cop Generates $8K for Special Olympics

Newport Beach police officers serve as celebrity waiters at the Yard House.

Newport Beach police's Tip-A-Cop event was a tremendous success, a police official reported today.

Newport Beach police officers spent several hours Wednesday night as celebrity hosts and servers at the Yard House restaurant at Fashion Island. The $8,700 they collected in tips will go to support Special Olympics activities in Orange County.

"Tip-A-Cop was a huge success," Kathy Lowe, police spokeswoman, said. "We are so grateful for the community’s support during this event and proud to be able to help support the dedicated Special Olympic Athletes, many of whom worked with us at the event last night."

Wednesday's event shows growth in community support for the Tip-A-Cop event. Last year, the event raised just over $6,000.
