Thieves Target Cars in Newport Beach

For the second time this month, police are urging residents to lock their cars as thieves strike again.

Thieves broke into five cars last week in Newport Beach, and police are reminding residents for a second time this month to be proactive.

The five thefts were reported Thursday in the Dover Shores/Mariners area. The thieves entered unlocked cars in the 1900 block of Holiday Road, 1800 block of Leeward Lane, and the 2000 block of Commodore Road, where a second burglary was reported earlier today, according to the Newport Beach Police Department. Among the stolen items were a taken a laptop, a wallet, a remote control car and clothing.   

Earlier this month, thieves broke into several cars in the Corona del Mar area and stole a cell phone headset, a camera, a sports bag, cash and an iPod. The cars that were burglarized were unlocked.

Police reminded residents to take the following precautions:

  •  Take all valuables out of the car or hide them before you park.
  •  Lock your vehicle.
  •  Make sure windows and sun roofs are closed.
