Thieves Prey on Cars at Newport Gyms

Police urge residents to keep valuables at home.

Police say thieves targeted cars in Newport Beach last month, while their owners were hitting the treadmills at local gyms.

The thefts occurred in the 3900 block of Birch and 3900 block of Campus between 7 and 8 a.m., and 6 and 8 p.m., according to a police report. In each case, the victims left their purse inside a locked vehicle and returned to find the window smashed and the purse gone. In one case, the victim also had her laptop taken, which had been left on the back floorboard of the vehicle.

In addition, police say over the last few months various gyms have reported thefts from lockers. Victims reported their stolen credit cards being used at nearby businesses immediately following the theft.
