Teen Driver in Crash that Killed 5 Reportedly Unlicensed

The teen driver in the Newport Beach crash that killed five, did not have a license or driver's permit, according to reports.

According to KFI News, 17-year-old Abdulrahman M. Alyahyan, a 12th grade student at University High School, had neither a driver’s permit nor license when he crashed his car into a tree Monday, killing himself and four friends.

The radio station quoted a California DMV spokesperson in confirming that Alyahyan was unlicensed.

The single-vehicle crash was reported Monday at 5:22 p.m. on Jamboree Road near Island Lagoon Drive. Kathy Lowe, Newport Beach police spokeswoman, said the 2008 Infiniti veered off the road and hit a tree in the center divider.

"Upon impact, the car split in half and one half caught on fire," Lowe said.

Four of the teens were ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. The fifth teenager was partially ejected, severely burned and died later at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

According to the Associated Press, a sixth teen was supposed to be along for the ride.

“Tamer Mosallam was supposed to get picked up on Memorial Day for a trip to the beach with friends, but his father had other ideas and the carload of teens left him behind,” the Associated Press reported.

"I was supposed to be with them in the car, that's why there were three girls," Mosallam told the Associated Press, explaining that he was to have been the third boy for a three-way double date. "They came to my house but my dad wouldn't let me go out because I was studying for a test."
