Student Shot With BB Gun at Costa Mesa School

An elementary school student was shot in the calf today with a BB gun, but was not seriously hurt, school district officials reported.

The incident was reported about 8 a.m. at College Park Elementary School's field area, according to Laura Boss, spokeswoman for the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

"Four students reported hearing what sounded like BBs being shot," Boss said.

The student was struck in the calf by a small metal projectile, and was treated in the school's health office and returned to class, Boss said.

The incident was under investigation by the Costa Mesa Police Department.

The school immediately implemented additional safety precautions which
include enhanced supervision on the playground and field, Boss said.
