Photos: Stray Dogs Abandoned Near Bayside Drive

Drivers on Bayside Drive were seen dodging two small dogs who were loose Friday morning. Animal control officers say the pair was likely abandoned off overnight.

Two dogs on the loose in Corona del Mar found their way into the park that runs along Bayside Drive, between Iris and Heliotrope, where they were running and playing until animal control arrived.

Newport Beach Animal Control Officer John Nelson arrived on scene and grabbed his lasso and a bag of doggie treats to attract the two dogs, but they didn't fall for the bait.

"The dogs were probably dumped here last night," Nelson said. "That's usually when it's done."

They dogs were dirty, with matted hair and were not wearing collars. Nelson explained that those are giveaways that the dogs were abandoned. One was interested in a bag of Sunchips neighbor neighbor had, and they both cautiously drank the water Nelson gave them.

The two scurried away when backup officers arrived. Nelson says the white dog was later captured, but the little brown one is still on the streets.
