Small Brush Fire Put Out in Newport Coast

Officials say a downed power line may have caused the blaze. No injuries are reported.

A vegetation fire scorched a small area of Newport Coast today, but no injuries were reported and no structures were damaged, a fire official reported.

Firefighters responded to the fire off the 73 Freeway behind Sage Hill High School at about 9:43 a.m., said Matt Brisbois, of the Newport Beach Fire Department.

"Once on scene they found a brush fire in vegetation that covered roughly 50 by 50 feet of vegetation," Brisbois said in a released statement. "Newport Beach firefighters aggressively attacked the fire and it was quickly extinguished."

The cause of the fire was under investigation but it appears a downed power line may have caused the fire, Brisbois said.

"The Newport Beach Fire Department would like to remind individuals that it is fire season and individuals should be careful when in wildland areas," Brisbois said.  "If you see suspicious activity in these areas you should immediately notify the authorities."
