Sleeping Tenants Escape Balboa Peninsula Fire

The blaze broke out inside the kitchen of an apartment and caused an estimated $80,000 in damage.

A fire broke out over the weekend inside an apartment on the Balboa Peninsula while three people were asleep inside, but they managed to escape without injury, a fire official said.

The fire was reported Saturday at 1:53 a.m. in the 500 block of East Balboa Boulevard.

"The fire was reported by an occupant, who said that his kitchen was on fire and that he was evacuating the residence," said Jennifer Schulz, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department.

Responding firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the upstairs apartment. They were able to quickly extinguish the blaze and contain it to the one unit. Schulz said the fire caused an estimated $80,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but investigators have determined that it began in the kitchen, on or near the stove top.
