PHOTOS: Seasonal Lifeguard Tryouts in Newport Beach

More than 150 lifeguard-hopefuls met at the Lifeguard Headquarters at the Newport Pier Sunday to compete in seasonal tryouts.

The 55 degree ocean water on Sunday morning didn't discourage 195 brave people from competing in the seasonal lifeguard tryouts in Newport Beach.

Participants first competed in a 1,000 meter ocean swim, and then a 1,000 meter run-swim-run. The top 35 participants from the events will be selected to continue on with the hiring process, which includes an interview session on Monday and physical and background checks.

"We're not just looking for high caliber athletes, but high caliber people," Captain Mike Halphide told participants before sending them off to the first event. "Best of luck to all of you."
