Police Volunteer 'Earl the Pearl' Dies at 96

A longtime Newport Beach Police Department volunteer passed away over the weekend, according to a post on the NBPD's Facebook page.

Earl Fusselman, who many referred to as "Earl the Pearl," was 96 and passed away "peacefully, while under medical care," the NBPD reported. Fusselman was a Newport Beach police volunteer for nearly 15 years and up until three weeks ago was still making his rounds doing weekly Vacation Check patrols around the city making sure homes were secure while residents were out of town.

On its Facebook page, the NBPD described Fusselman as "an incredible man and an integral part of our NBPD family. He will be sorely missed."

The NBPD held a surprise 96th birthday party for Fusselman in September at Rose's Bakery in Corona del Mar.
