Police to Host Battle of the Badges Blood Drive

If you would like to join the Newport Beach Police Department in the friendly competition be sure to make an appointment.

The Newport Beach Police Department is urging the community to give blood during the upcoming seventh annual Battle of the Badges Red Cross Blood Drive.

The blood drive will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Newport Beach Police Department's auditorium, 870 Santa Barbara Drive. Kathy Lowe, police spokeswoman, says the blood drive will be a joint effort between the department and community members.

"There is a constant need for blood and it is important for those who can donate blood, to do so in order to maintain a healthy supply," Lowe said. "In the past we have had between 50-65 people donate at this event."

Last year the Battle of the Badges campaign recruited 5,178 donors. This time around the American Red Cross has set a regional goal of 5,500 donors. According to Lowe, approximately 37 percent of the American population is eligible to donate blood, but only 10 percent do so each year. One donation could potentially save up to three lives.

Donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Parents or legal guardians must accompany 16-year-olds wishing to donate. For all donor guidelines, click here.
