Update: Police Arrest Stolen Car Suspect After Foot Pursuit

The suspect ditched the car he was driving - which was reported stolen - early Tuesday, but Newport Beach police found him a few hours later.

A suspect, who Newport Beach police tried to pull over this morning for driving a reported stolen car, was arrested this afternoon following a foot pursuit near John Wayne Airport, a police official said.

The incident began about 6:30 a.m. when police attempted to stop the suspect who was driving a car in the area of Mar Vista and Vista del Oro which had been reported stolen, police said. Instead of pulling over, the suspect abandoned the car and fled on foot. At about 12:11 p.m., an officer spotted a man who matched the description near the airport, but the man ran away, Jennifer Manzella, police spokeswoman, said.

The officer chased the suspect, and additional support including more police officers, detectives and a police helicopter were used to find the man who was located and apprehended just after 12:30 p.m. in the area of Bristol Street and Campus Drive, police reported.

The man was identified Wednesday as Luciano Mendoza Garcilazo, 28, of Costa Mesa.

No other information was available.
