Police Name Person of Interest in High School Computer Hacking Case

Timothy Lance Lai, 28, of Irvine is wanted for questioning by the Newport Beach Police Department.

Newport Beach police have named an Irvine tutor as a  person of interest wanted for questioning in a computer hacking case involving several students at Corona del Mar High School, officials announced Thursday.

Police are currently looking for Timothy Lance Lai, a 28-year-old Irvine resident and private tutor, who is suspected of teaching students at CdM High School how to illegally access and change their grades on staff computers at the school.

"Mr. Lai is wanted for questioning and police currently do not know his whereabouts," Newport Beach police Sgt. Mark Hamilton said in a released statement.

Administrators at CdM High School became aware of the computer hacking incident on Tuesday, according to district spokeswoman Laura Boss. The students are suspected of changing grades and accessing tests after allegedly having help from Lai.

Anyone with information on Timothy Lai’s location is asked to call Detective David Syvock at 949-644-3771 or Detective Sergeant Doug Jones at 949-644-3775.
