Police Issue Tips to Keep Purses Safe

Advisory is prompted by two recent thefts.

On the heels of two purse thefts, the Newport Beach Police Department issued some crime tips Monday.

Crime Prevention Specialist Andi Querry said two recent events prompted the advisory.

"In the first case, the woman had an open-top purse and her wallet was removed without her knowledge," Querry said. "In the second case, the woman was dining. She simply placed her purse over the back of her chair, and when she got up to leave her purse was gone."

Safety tips:

  • Buy a purse that has a secured top, preferrably a zipper.
  • Never put your purse on the ground when unloading groceries. While shopping, secure your purse in the cart with the child safety belt.
  • Use a purse hook while dining, so your purse and wallet are never out of sight.
