Police to Focus on Curfew Enforcement

Following an increase in burglary and thefts from cars in Newport Beach, police are focusing on curfew enforcement this month.

Police are keeping a close eye on kids who are out after curfew this month, in order to reduce crime and keep youngsters safe from becoming a crime victim.

Police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe said curfew violations are enforced throughout the year, but said Monday some recent events also added to the timeliness of this month's curfew enforcement.

"We conduct curfew violation operations throughout the year. Recently we have had an uptick in the number of burglary and thefts from motor vehicles," Lowe said. "Quite often juveniles are involved in these types of crimes."

The nighttime curfew prohibits minors from loitering in public streets, alleys and other public places between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. The curfew is intended to reduce crime and keep kids from becoming crime victims themselves.
