Police Credit Decline in Vehicle Thefts to Quick Tips

A few easy tips can keep your vehicle and belongings safe.

Car burglaries in Newport Beach have declined thanks in part to some quick prevention tips, police say.

In July there was a nearly 50 percent reduction in the number of burglary and theft from cars from the month before, according to the Newport Beach Police Department. In order to keep the downward trend ongoing, police recommend the following five safety tips:

1. Lock and secure all doors and windows, even if you're gone for only a few minutes.

3. When parking outside of your garage, treat your garage door opener as if it were a key to your home and remove it from your vehicle.

4. If your vehicle has an alarm, don't forget to activate it!

5. Always park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
