Plane Registered to Newport Man Crashes

It is unclear whether the Newport Beach resident was aboard the single-engine plane when it crashed near San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport.

Two people were injured this morning when a single-engine airplane registered to a Newport Beach man crashed near San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Both people on board the plane were hospitalized, the FAA said; more about the extent of their injuries was not immediately available.

The 1943 Aeronca airplane is registered to Jefferey B. Wells of Newport Beach, according to FAA records. It is unclear if Wells was on the plane when it crashed.

The pilot of the Aeronca contacted air traffic controllers at San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport about 9:50 a.m., saying he had an emergency and was going down, according to preliminary reports from the FAA. The aircraft hit trees and crashed about four miles from the airport.

It was unclear where the plane had departed from and where it was heading, the FAA said. An investigation is underway.
