UPDATE: Elderly Man Pulled From Water, Pronounced Dead Near Balboa Island

Newport resident Robert Legallee, 73, was pronounced dead Tuesday after being pulled onto a dock near North Bayfront, according to the coroner's office.

Two witnesses pulled an elderly Newport Beach man out of the water near Balboa Island Tuesday afternoon, but he was pronounced dead a short time later, officials reported.

Robert Legallee, 73, was found in the water about 4:34 p.m. near North Bayfront and Collins Avenue on Balboa Island, according to the Orange County Coroner's office.

"Prior to the incident, the reporting party was swimming in the area and saw a person in the water between a dock and a boat," said Jennifer Schulz, of the Newport Beach Fire Department.

Responding firefighters found Legallee lying on the dock and pronounced him dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted this week to determine Legallee's cause of death.

Today's fatal incident is the second ocean related death in Newport Beach in less than one month. On June 27 an Arizona man died at Hoag Hospital after he was pulled out of the ocean near 15th Street and Oceanfront.
