Injuries Reported in Newport Beach Apartment Fire

Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to more than one unit.

An unidentified person suffered minor injuries Wednesday when a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Newport Beach, a fire official said.

The blaze was reported at 1:58 p.m. at the Palm Mesa Apartments at 1561 Mesa Drive, according to Jennifer Shulz of the Newport Beach Fire Department.

"When firefighters arrived on scene they found smoke showing from a second floor apartment," Schulz said. "Firefighters quickly found the fire in the wall of the apartment and extinguished it."

The firefighters were able to prevent the fire from traveling to neighboring apartments or the attic, she said.

The victim was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released. Schulz said the fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damages to the apartment and started when a plumbing contractor was soldering pipes in a bathroom.
