Pedestrian Critical After Being Hit by Taxi

The 51-year-old man was crossing the street at East Coast Highway and MacArthur Boulevard in Newport Beach on Monday night.

A 51-year-old man was critically injured Monday after being struck by a taxicab in Newport Beach, police said.

The crash occurred about 7 p.m. when the pedestrian was hit at the transition lane from East Coast Highway to northbound MacArthur Boulevard. Kathy Lowe, police spokeswoman, said the pedestrian suffered critical injuries and was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.

The 54-year-old male driver of the black 2003 Ford Crown Victoria taxicab was not injured.

Lowe said a preliminary investigation showed alcohol and drugs weren't a factor in the collision.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Traffic Investigator Scott Grecco at 949-644-3747 or sgrecco@nbpd.org.
