Newport Teen Killed in Off-Road Crash

Alex Chisholm, 17, suffered a lacerated liver after losing control of his motorcycle while off-roading in Borrego Springs.

A Newport Beach teen died Sunday from injuries he suffered during an off-roading accident in Borrego Springs, authorities reported.

Alex Chisholm, 17, was injured about 4 p.m. Sunday at Ocotillo Wells State Off Road Vehicle Recreation Area, according to local authorities.  Chisholm was behind the wheel of an off-road motorcycle when he lost control and struck his handlebars.

"He had been riding at 25 miles per hours, crossed a track and lost control," Vicky Waters, spokeswoman for the California Department of Parks and Recreation, said. "When he was ejected, the handlebars hit him in the abdomen."

When Ocotillo Wells rangers, lifeguards and fire officials responded to the scene, Chisholm was down and complaining of abdomen pain. Waters said he suffered a lacerated liver. Chisholm was transported by air ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs where he was pronounced dead just after 11 p.m.

Chisholm was riding alone at the time of his accident. Waters said there were no witnesses to the crash.
