Newport Police Make 12 DUI Arrests Over Holiday Weekend

The Newport Beach Police Department steped up DUI patrols during the holiday weekend.

Newport Beach police arrested 12 people on suspicion of drunken driving over the holiday weekend, a spokesman for the department said.

Officers made one DUI arrest Friday, eight on Saturday, one on Sunday and two on Monday, according to Sgt. Steve Burdette.

The Newport Beach Police Department was among 38 law enforcement agencies around the county to step up DUI patrols during the holiday weekend. Countywide, participating agencies made 45 DUI arrests, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. In Irvine, a 14-year-old girl was killed when the car she was in was hit by a vehicle driven by a suspected drunken driver, the sheriff's department reported.
