Newport Beach Police to Host 'Community Connect' Event

Bike and boardwalk safety information, as well as home security tips, will be available at the event.

In recent months, the Newport Beach Police Department has seen a sharp increase in bicycle thefts.

In an effort to keep bikes in the city from attracting the attention of thieves, the Police Department is holding Community Connect on Wednesday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Newport Pier, according to Kathy Lowe, police spokeswoman.

At the event, residents can get information on boardwalk safety, home security, bike safety, the Citizens' Police Academy and more. For more information call 949-644-3699.

Bike Safety Tips:

1. Police recommend residents license their bikes immediately after purchase, because if the bike is lost or stolen, its registration number can help the department return it. Bikes can be licensed for $2 at the Newport Beach Police Department, 870 Santa Barbara Dr., or at any Newport Beach Fire Station.

2. In addition to licensing your bike, it is recommended that you purchase a sturdy lock and secure your bike to an immovable object or store it in a locked garage.

Residents are encouraged to call police at 949-644-3717 to report suspicious activity.
