Newport Beach Police Settle Lawsuits Brought by Former Officers

The city will pay out close to $1 million.

Two lawsuits filed by three former Newport Beach Police Department officers who claimed they were retaliated against for complaining about how promotions were handed out have been settled for nearly $1 million, a city official said today.

Under the settlement, the city's excess insurance carrier will pay $600,000 and the city $350,000, said public information manager Tara Finnegan.

“While the city disagrees with the former police officers' allegations, its excess insurance carrier (the city's partner in the litigation) determined that it is more economical to end the litigation at this time rather than incur additional legal fees through trial,” Finnegan said.
