Must-See Video: Police Tell Residents to Lock It or Lose It

Vehicle burglaries have been big business in Newport Beach. Police say it takes just a few seconds to keep statistics from rising.

Newport Beach police report 90 percent of total crimes reported in the city this year were property crimes (burglaries, petty thefts and grand thefts). Thirty-seven percent of those crimes involved vehicles, and 54 percent of vehicle crimes involved unlocked cars. To help , police say it's important for residents to lock their vehicles.

In this video, Officer David Darling of the Newport Beach Police Department says it took police 19,360 hours to report and investigate property crimes in 2011, which cost the community approximately $719,400. Darling explained it only takes five seconds to lock and secure valuables, thereby saving the the department a ton of time and money and safeguarding property.
