Newport Beach Police Fire at Man Seen Shooting into Home

Newport Beach resident Scott Jay Abraham is in critical condition.

A 43-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting in Newport Beach, police said today.

The suspect was identified as Scott Jay Abraham, a Newport Beach resident, according to a Newport Beach Police Department news release.

Police responded to a call of shots fired in the 4600 block of Seashore Drive at 9:45 p.m. Friday saw the suspect walk out of a residence onto a beach-facing patio, the release said.

The suspect then fired an additional round, the statement said.

Newport Beach Police Sgt. Penny Freeman said the direction and purpose of the shot was under investigation.

Two officers returned fire, striking the suspect, whose condition was listed as critical.

Freeman said the residence where the shooting occurred belonged to a relative of the suspect.

No officers were hurt in the incident, which will be investigated by the Orange County District Attorney's office, according to the release.
