Police Add Extra Presence to Movie Theaters

In the wake of the Aurora Theater Massacre in Colorado, the Newport Beach Police Department has increased patrols at local movie theaters.

Despite the tragic Aurora Theater Massacre in Colorado, thousands of people are expected to hit movie theaters across the country this weekend to watch Batman: The Dark Knight Rises.

In Newport Beach, police will make sure safety is top priority.

"Due to the tragic event in Colorado, we will be monitoring the movie theaters in the city," Kathy Lowe, police spokeswoman, told Patch. "We will increase patrols in and around the theaters."

The ramped up security will likely help movie-goers, like resident Christina McDowell, feel more at ease.

"I know this was so random, but you can't help but feel scared now," McDowell, 22, said. "I'm watching it tonight at Island Cinemas. I feel better knowing police will be there, because I was thinking about not going."
