Newport Beach Drowning Victim Identified

He died an hour after being transported to the hospital.

A 49-year-old man who drowned in the surf off the Newport Beach coast was identified today by the Orange County coroner's office.

Donald Griffin was found in the water off the coast at 501 Via Lido Soud at 11:45 p.m. last Sunday, according to the coroner's office.

Griffin was taken to Hoag Memorial Presbyterian Hospital in Newport Beach where he died about an hour later, according to the coroner's office. Salt water drowning was listed as the official cause of death.
