Residents Allowed Home After Natural-Gas Leak

Firefighters evacuated about 15 residents on Balboa Island.

More than a dozen residents of Balboa Island were evacuated from their homes Tuesday after a natural-gas leak occurred at a construction site, a fire official said.

Around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters responded to the gas leak in the 800 block of South Bayfront. When they arrived, firefighters evacuated about 15 people from residences on Sapphire Avenue, which was adjacent to and downwind of the leak, said Jennifer Schulz of the Newport Beach Fire Department.

"Firefighters immediately evacuated nearby homes on Sapphire Avenue and South Bayfront and called for resources from the Gas Co. to close the line," she said.
