National Night Out is Tuesday

The Newport Beach Police Department invites residents to Bonita Canyon Sports Park to learn about crime and drug prevention.

National Night Out will be celebrated in communities all across the nation -- and in Newport Beach -- on Tuesday to promote a crime-free community.

From 4 to 7 p.m., the Newport Beach Police Department will be hosting a community barbecue and safety fair at Bonita Canyon Sports Park, 1990 Ford Rd.

Police will be providing information on crime and drug prevention, home security, child safety, the Citizens’ Police Academy, and Volunteers In Policing. CSI, SWAT, K-9 Officers, animal control and several police vehicles will also be on display.

National Night Out started 29 years ago by National Association of Town Watch as a crime prevent tool for police and a way for neighbors to meet each other. The first National Night Out was marked on the first Tuesday of August in a simple way: residents turned on their porch lights and sat on their front porch.
