Men Robbed at Gunpoint in Newport Beach, Costa Mesa

Police say the armed robberies may be connected. No injuries are reported.

Police are looking for two gunmen believed to be responsible for three armed robberies early today in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. No injuries were reported in any of the crimes. 

The incident in Newport Beach was reported about 2 a.m. when a man walking alone at Bristol Street and Jamboree Road was confronted at gunpoint by two men. The robbers took the man's cell phone, backpack, $107, wallet and some of his clothes, according to Newport Beach police Sgt. Eric Peterson said. 

The other two robberies occurred in Costa Mesa. At 12:03 a.m., two men confronted a 30-year-old man walking alone on Cabrillo Street at Orange Avenue and demanded his money, said Costa Mesa police Sgt. Jerry Souza. One man acted as if he had a handgun, and the victim told police he heard the sliding sound of a semiautomatic gun being cocked. The suspects took the victim's cell phone, wallet and other property and fled on foot, Souza said.

Violence in San Clemente: Home Invasion Robbery Leads to 5 Arrests

The second Costa Mesa robbery occurred at 12:52 this morning when a man walking on Newport Boulevard at Del Mar Avenue was confronted by two men who demanded money, Souza said. The victim told police the robbers started emptying his pockets, and when he asked to keep his identification, one robber displayed a black semiautomatic handgun. The men took the victim's wallet and cell phone but may have let him keep his ID, Souza said.

"It looks like the suspect descriptions matched, and they appear to have been similar types of crimes," said Kathy Lowe, spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Police Department. "That's why there is the indication that they may be related.

The three victims described the robbers as Hispanic. One was between 5 feet 10 and 6 feet tall, weighing 200-220 pounds, and wore a dark shirt and dark pants. His partner was between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 10,  weighing 130-170 pounds, and wore a dark hoodie sweatshirt and dark pants.
