Man Rescued After Car Falls into Creek

A man was rescued early Saturday morning when his car fell 200 feet down into a creek near Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Beach, a fire official reported.

Firefighters from Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Orange County Fire Authority, Newport Beach police and the California Highway Patrol responded to the crash just before 5 a.m. Newport Beach fire captain Kevin Tiscareno said the car was traveling on Coast Highway when it fell about 200 feet down into a creek.

The man called 911 and told the dispatcher water from the creek was rising in his car, Tiscareno said in a released statement.

"There were no witnesses to the incident, which made it challenging locating the vehicle," Tiscareno explained.

Newport Beach firefighters performed a rope lowering operation, according to Tiscareno, which included lighting the scene which was full of heavy brush and using extrication tools to remove the man from the crashed car.

The man was taken to a local trauma center with unknown injuries.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.
