Man Kills Self in Front of Police at Arroyo Park

Police say the unidentified man died Wednesday evening from a self-inflicted gunshot.

A man died Wednesday after apparently shooting himself in front of police at a park in Newport Beach, a police official reported.

At about 5:45 p.m., Newport police received a call from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department requesting assistance in finding a man who had been reported as missing, according to Kathy Lowe, Newport Beach police spokeswoman.

"Officers located the individual, who was sitting in his vehicle, in the parking lot of Arroyo Park," Lowe said in a released statement. "When responding officers attempted to contact the individual inside the vehicle, he displayed a handgun and shot himself.
