Man Injured When SUV Hits Tree in Newport Beach

The man was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were not serious, police say.

A man was hospitalized with injuries he suffered when he lost control of his speeding sport utility vehicle and slammed into a tree in Newport Beach, police said.

The accident occurred on southbound Jamboree Road near Camelback Street around 11:50 p.m Wednesday, when a Dodge Durango skidded into the median and the passenger side somehow ended up hitting a tree, said Newport Beach police Sgt. Eric Peterson.

Newport Beach firefighters extricated the man from the wreckage and transported him to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, Peterson said, adding he had no major injuries.

"It was lucky there was no passenger, because the tree is now in that seat,'' Peterson said. Police officers went to the hospital to investigate whether the driver was under the influence at the time of the crash.
