Man Critically Injured After Jumping from Newport Bridge

A man jumps 30-feet off a Newport Beach overpass and is taken to a hospital in critical condition.

A man suffered critical injuries Thursday after he jumped 30-feet off a bridge in Newport Beach, a fire official reported.


At about 6:30 a.m. the man jumped off Arches Bridge located at Newport Boulevard and West Coast Highway. Responding Newport Beach fire units found a man sitting on the curb under the bridge who told emergency responders he jumped from the overpass, Newport Beach Fire Capt. Mike Liberto reported.

"The patient’s injuries were significant and included his upper and lower extremities," Liberto said in a released statement. 

The man was placed in cervical spinal precautions at the scene. He was taken to Western Medical Center in critical condition where a specialized trauma team was waiting for him, Liberto said.   

No other information was released.
