Man Arrested in Hotel Gym Locker Theft

David Scott Raines is accused of stealing credit cards at Island Hotel and using them to shop at Fashion Island.

A man suspected of breaking into a gym locker and stealing credit cards at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach has been arrested, police said Tuesday.

David Scott Raines, 44, of Beaumont, was taken into custody Friday about 4:30 p.m., after an employee at the Marriott Hotel recognized him as a suspect wanted in connection with a commerical burglary, according to Newport Beach police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.

"Raines is suspected of burglarizing a locker at the Island Hotel Spa on Sept. 11, and later using credit cards taken in the burglary to purchase items at a store in Fashion Island," Lowe said. "He tried to make a spa appointment and asked to use the restroom facility in the spa."
