UPDATE: Rape Suspect Arrested After SWAT Standoff

A Newport Beach man was taken into custody this morning by members of the SWAT team on charges of rape and kidnapping.

A man who was arrested in Newport Beach after being barricaded in his home for seven hours, is behind bars today on $100,000 bail, police said.

David Charles Wilson, 48, is being held on suspicion of rape and kidnapping, according to Sgt. Steve Burdette of the Newport Beach Police Department.

The charges stem from an incident that began about 3 a.m. Monday when police and SWAT officers were called to a home in the 4600 block of Camden Drive after neighbors reported seeing people running through bushes on the hillside, Burdette said.

"Upon arrival, the officers located a car leaving the scene with two females inside," Burdette said. "One of the women said she was held against her will and raped at the Camden address."

Police went to the house and tried to make contact with the suspect, but he refused to open the door and did not answer his phone.

“At that point we set up a perimeter and brought in our hostage and negotiation teams to see if they could make contact,” Burdette said.

Police finally made contact with the man just before 10 a.m., and took him into custody without incident.  Burdette said the man could be facing kidnapping and rape charges.

The female victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. Detective were still processing the scene.
