Update: Driver Dies After Crash on PCH

A man was killed early today in Newport Beach when two cars crashed and one of them hit a pole, police reported.

A Nissan Maxima and a Nissan Quest crashed just before 7 a.m. at the intersection of East Coast Highway and Promontory Point Drive, police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella reported.

"The Maxima struck a pole during the collision and the male driver sustained major injuries," Manzella said.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to get the man out of the mangled car, Newport Beach Fire Capt. Mike Liberto said.

The man was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana in critical condition, where he later died. A second person was treated and released at the scene.

Newport Beach police issued a Nixle alert Wednesday morning advising drivers to avoid the area because traffic may be affected for several hours.

Anyone with information about the fatal crash is asked to contact Investigator Scott Grecco at 949-644-3747 or sgrecco@nbpd.org.
