Longtime Lifeguard Dies After Fall from Bicycle

Newport Beach native Brian Gray was 38 years old.

A well-known figure in Newport Beach died after a fall from a bicycle in a city parking lot on Saturday, according to the Orange County Coroner’s office.

Brian Gray, 38, fell and was taken to Western Medical Center where he was declared dead, said Kelly Keyes, an investigator with the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

Police responding to a report of a man down found Gray just after 2 a.m. at 26th Street and Newport Boulevard, according to the Orange County Register.

Keyes said the cause of death was not yet determined, and it also was not clear if he was on duty at the time of his death.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Gray was a part-time seasonal Newport Beach lifeguard part of the year. A Newport Beach Police Department watch commander could not confirm the report.

Most recently he had worked as a courier for the Newport Beach Fire Department, The Times also reported.

He is survived by his parents, John and Mary Lou; his brother Robert, sister-in-law Claire, nieces Nya and Gorgie, and nephew James, the Times reported.
