Cops Pull Guns on L.A. Angels' Torii Hunter at His Own Home

Officers unholster their weapons after the right fielder accidentally sets off his home security system. He later thanks police for protecting his property.

Newport Beach police caught Los Angeles Angels right fielder Torii Hunter off guard Wednesday afternoon when a false alarm led them to show up at his Newport Coast home with guns drawn.

On his Twitter account, Hunter later said the close call with police started after he accidentally set off the security system while entering his home on Coral Cay.

"My alarm went off in my house while I was in it. Twenty mins later I saw cops checking out the scene. Went outside and they drew their guns on me," Hunter tweeted. "They didn't believe I lived here in Newport coast so they walked me upstairs at gunpoint to get my ID."

Police confirmed officers were dispatched to Hunter's home in response to an alarm call. Hunter said once he was able to prove his identity, the mood changed quickly.

"When I showed him my ID, he said I'm an angel fan hope u guys have a great season," Hunter tweeted. "ARE U KIDDING ME!!!!!! Lol."

Hunter said he was thankful police responded to the alarm call and said they did a great job protecting his home.

"I'm not upset that the cops did their job today. I'm actually glad they were protecting my home," Hunter tweeted.

Brian,
I haven't called you a name or accused you of ignorance. We disagree. However I am not sure why you are so reluctant to just have a discussion without all the rancor.
The Beast ! April 5, 2012 at 03:05 pm
Your passing judgements without facts. You said;
" I am sad to live in a world where justice is not equal for ALL". " We are all guilty of preconceived judgements" everyone !!!! really can you prove that? "It is an observation about the state of our society" Yeah your observations ! some of us love our society and the way it is. "It is not OK for anyone to live in fear because of them. Awareness of them is the first step in erasing them" Really who's living in fear ?
Ronc4109 April 5, 2012 at 03:13 pm
I had this same thing happen to me one time. There is an easier way to handle it: I SLOWLY opened the door, yelled out to the police that I was the owner and held out my hand with my drivers license slowly outside the door. No problem.
Pam Sunderman April 5, 2012 at 03:57 pm
Brian, I believe Ronc4109 was a little fearful.
And do you think that perhaps Tayvon Martin was a little fearful when he was followed when he was walking through his own neighborhood? Obviously the guy that shot him was fearful...but of what? He is a victim of his own prejudice...very sad. My brother-in-law was a little fearful when he set off the alarm at his neighbors home when feeding the cat. He is a doctor living in an upscale neighborhood and he is hispanic. He wanted to appear docile and cooperative when seeing the police drive up. If I had been feeding that cat I don't think I would have felt as fearful...maybe a little nervous. How would you have felt? Have you never judged a person by how they looked? If you think not then you are not being honest with yourself. Have you never looked twice at a person parked in your neighborhood who looked like they might not belong? Have you never wondered if the gardener was illegally here? We do it all the time. We judge old people, people of color, people with piercings or tattoos, woman, men. I am tempted to make some judgements about you based on what you post here. That may or may not be true. You have certainly judged me on the basis of one post.
The Beast ! April 5, 2012 at 04:20 pm
Yes your post of prejudices. Everyone has prejudices is call "PRE JUDGING" and it extends to all races !
So quit trying to say it only impacts people of color. Take yourself to Compton, Watts or South Los Angeles and see if people there will make you feel uncomfortable or have prejudices ! Your very unworldly and probably dont wander beyond the orange curtain too often !
Pam Sunderman April 5, 2012 at 04:25 pm
As I said in my first post..."We are all guilty of preconceived judgements."
The Beast ! April 5, 2012 at 04:31 pm
I guess all of your "AWARENESS" doesnt seem to helping you !
Thats life its the way we are programmed, so quit trying to make everything about color ! and race ! What about fat people or ugly people ..........whats the difference ! I think were all sick and tired of people like yourself making everything a race issue. Maybe its your own hidden guilt !
Pam Sunderman April 5, 2012 at 04:46 pm
Where is all that anger coming from? If you reread my posts you will see that I am not just talking about race.
Or maybe this dialog is doomed.
The Beast ! April 5, 2012 at 05:30 pm
"But ask any person of color and they will tell you a story about this" your exact words !!!!
YOU are the problem with prejudices today ! so before you start blasting off your comments without any facts look at what your saying before being so quick to judge people. I'M DONE WITH YOU !
GreenInOC April 5, 2012 at 07:10 pm
This is a very odd exchange in the comments. My perception in reading them is @Brian is upset about something that is either preventing him from fully reading @Jollygirl's comments or understanding them.
It's a very interesting microcosm of the issue - we can't get even hear each other over our own inner dialogue.

RACISM! the sky is falling .....SQUACK....RACISM THE SKY IS FALLING.........gag me :(

Well done, Madame, Miss, or Ms.

Nice to hear from two voices of reason. All I wanted was a dialog.
CriticalThinkerInFV April 5, 2012 at 11:33 pm
Take a xanex or smoke some marijuana Brian, jollygirl is on the mark for the most part. Even if you dont agree, the way you express your position just makes you seem like an emotional wreck.

and add another thumbs up for JollyGirl from me.
Everyone has preconceived notions of those that are NOT like them. Heck, we have preconceived notions of those who we think are like us. That is not racism, that is how we are built. When I worked for Tony Robbins at his UPW programs there was an exercise we did with the participants called "mirroring". In this exercise we would have the participants work in groups of three. One would "get comfortable" and think of a time of great emotion for them. One would look at them and then attempt to mirror the person in state. Then when they thought they were done the third person would "adjust them" so that the mirroring was as close as possible. At that point we would ask person #2 how they felt, what they felt, etc. My favorite threesome was two men and a woman. The woman got into state and then one man mirrored. After the second man got the mirror almost perfect he asked the first man "so, what are you feeling?" The first man replied "I'm having a baby!" The exact state the female participant was reaching back for. The point is that we can "get into the state" of each other, but it takes a great deal to do so. We all come with our preconceived ideas and sometimes it takes a great deal to get past them. With help sometimes we can truly become empathetic, but most of us barely get past our programming to get to that point.

Why didn't the police officer believe he lived in Newport Coast? Why did he had to show ID? It is outward bias of the police officer and inward negative belief or perceptions about all Blacks in America.
GreenInOC April 6, 2012 at 01:09 pm
I love this project! As a jumping off point to have this discussion, people were asked to get to the heart of racism in 6 words or less (scroll down a bit to see them):

Just a thought.... maybe we should ALL keep a signed photograph on our wall near the front door to expedite identification verification..... just saying.
marlene April 11, 2012 at 12:44 am
this is a prime example of trayvon martin color is an issue they had la angel tori hunter gun pointed until he could prove he lived in the nice house that they thought he was robbing. Its pathetic how are society has made our life thinking that colored men are criminals. My god bless everyone and notice color isnt an evil skin color its god children
The Beast ! April 11, 2012 at 01:32 pm
The article mentions nothing of color or trevon martin maybe you have "preconceived notions".
I believe the police have a legal obligation to confirm he lives there. Nobody knows what happened there nor does anyone knopw what happened in the trevon martin case. so why would you be making comments regarding an issue you have ZERO facts about. The problem is with people having "preconceived notions"...........The article mentions nothing about race you immediatly jump on the race issue. DISGUSTING !!!!!!! as you live in WHITE orange county !!!!
GreenInOC April 11, 2012 at 01:42 pm
@The Beast !, police of course have an obligation to confirm that people live where they say they live in these types of situations. The reason that this was news was that the police took the highly unusual step to draw their guns while they performed this task because they did not believe he lived in Newport Coast.
Why do you think the officers would not believe that Mr. Hunter did not live in Newport Coast? This is a comment section which encourages people to comment. If you don't believe people should comment without every single fact of every story, why are you commenting? What did you mean by "as you live in WHITE orange county !!!!"?
The Beast ! April 11, 2012 at 01:48 pm
You are basing your facts from a "TWEET" that was send out by tori ! why is it unusual do you know what was procieved by the responding officers !
I believe you like many other americas read too much into these stories and its your own toughts that are the problem.
GreenInOC April 11, 2012 at 02:17 pm
@The Beast !, I have no reason to not believe him, do you?
If you don't think they didn't think he lived he lived there, then why do you suppose they made the highly unusual move to draw their guns? Again, what did you mean by "as you live in WHITE orange county !!!!"? Again, this is a comment section which encourages people to comment. If you don't believe people should comment without every single fact of every story, why are you commenting?

Fact: Orange County has been THE bastion of middle to upper class whites for 50 years, with the Newport/Corona del Mar address among the most prestigeous. OC was/is home to the John Birch Socirety and other far right groups. It was a scandal when a democrat was first elected to the County Board of Supervisors a few decades ago. But it is also a fact that OC cities like Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Anaheim have become fully integrated and even dominated by people of all colors, and places like Newport are 'whiter' because they have become extremely expensive, a place where top athletes like Torii have helped break the color line. OC has passed through it's history of intolerance to a place where race is increasingly not an issue. IMO
Michael April 13, 2012 at 06:45 am
The way it is described by Hunter,
"They didn't believe I lived here in Newport coast so they walked me upstairs at gunpoint to get my ID." Unoe!
The Beast ! April 16, 2012 at 03:51 pm
Why is race the issue here ?
Why dont the rest of you read it like this; Police respond to a burglary alarm call and detain occupant util it's confirmed that he's the home owner. THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED RIGHT ?
The Beast ! April 16, 2012 at 04:07 pm
Michael,
Would you want the police to just believe that you lived in your home under the same circumstances, without confirming your identity via an inspection of your drivers license, mail etc....... I liked the way the police handled this maybe Tori has issues with his race and is so shallow that he believes everything is about race rather than police standards and training. And whats more amazing is how many others are so quick to scream race as being an issue.
MFriedrich April 16, 2012 at 06:38 pm
This remind me almost exactly of the Dave Chapelle stand up performance called "Killing Them Softly" when he mentions this bit, to pillory cops in the US:
"Oh my god. Open and shut case, Johnson. I saw this once when I was a rookie. Apparently this ........ broke in and put up pictures of his family everywhere.'
The Beast ! April 16, 2012 at 06:43 pm
MFriedrich ......that's funny
