Join National Night Out on Tuesday

National Night Out aims to teach the community about crime and drug prevention.

On Tuesday thousands of neighborhoods across the country will be participating in the 30th annual National Night Out to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention event.

From 7 to 10 p.m. Newport Beach residents are asked to join the rest of the country and lock their doors, turn on their exterior lights and spend the night outside with neighbors and police. Spyglass Hill Neighborhood Watch is hosting their first annual NNO event this year and police encourage other neighborhoods to host their own gatherings.

Residents are also invited to the Newport Beach Police Department's NNO event from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bonita Canyon Sports Park for a Community Barbecue and Safety Fair. Police will be providing information on drug and alcohol prevention, home security, child safety, crime prevention, the Citizens Police Academy and Volunteers in Policing.

C.S.I., S.W.A.T., animal control, mounted patrol and canine officers will also be at the event. Kids are invited to get their pictures taken in both a police car and on a police motorcycle, and with a horse from the Mounted Patrol. There will also be a visit from McGruff, “The Crime Fighting Dog”.

The NBPD will be passing out free Child ID Safety Kits and the Fire Department will join us to barbecue hot dogs and hamburgers.

For more information on this event, or if you want to host a get-together in your own neighborhood, contact Crime Prevention Specialist Andi Querry at 949-644-3699.

National Night Out was designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and “fighting back”.

Over 37 million people in American are expected to participate in Tuesday's National Night Out.
