Update: Sex Offender Freed Hours After Being Sentenced to Two Year Prison Term

Curtis Michael Regulus pleaded guilty to assaulting a 14-year-old girl while she rode the bus.

A homeless sex offender who frequented Newport Beach and Costa Mesa was sentenced this week to two years in prison, but was released hours later, according to authorities.

Curtis Michael Regulus, 40, pleaded guilty Tuesday to two felony counts of lewd acts upon a 14-year-old child and one felony count of assault with the intent to commit a sexual offense. The felonies stem from an incident that happened on June 19, 2010 when the teenage girl hopped on a bus in Placentia after visiting her grandmother. Online information from the Orange County Sheriff's Department's  shows Regulus was released about 11:40 p.m. on Tuesday -- hours after his sentencing -- because of credit for the time he served since being arrested on June 24, 2010.

Prosecutors said the girl sat in the back of the bus, but moved to the front when Regulus sat behind her and made her uncomfortable. Regulus followed the girl when she moved and sat directly across the aisle from her. According to the D.A., when the bus reached the intersection of Orangethorpe Avenue and Harbor Boulevard in Anaheim, the girl walked to the back doors to get off the bus but before she could get out Regulus walked up behind her and pushed himself against her. Prosecutors said she pushed Regulus away and pounded on the door of the bus for the driver to open it.

The girl walked to the intersection to cross the street and while she waited Regulus walked up behind her again and pushed his body against hers. She tried to push him away, but Regulus grabbed her arm and pulled her toward him. The two struggled and the girl was able to get away and run across the street.

Court records show Regulus has been convicted six times for similar crimes related to touching others inappropriately.
